Stroop Effect Test
The Stroop Effect test is an established experimental paradigm in cognitive neuropsychology demonstrating reaction time latency when the semantic meaning of a word conflicts with the color ink it is printed in (e.g. the word "BLUE" printed in red ink).
Stroop Effect Cognitive Test
A color name is displayed in a MISMATCHED font color. Tap the button matching the INK COLOR of the text, not what it reads.
How to use
- Focus exclusively on the ink color of each presented word.
- Actively disregard what the word actually reads.
- Select the corresponding color button as swiftly as possible.
- Maintain high accuracy through both congruent and incongruent trials.
- Review your Stroop interference index calculated in milliseconds.
Neuropsychological Mechanism
Reading is an overlearned, automatic cognitive task that occurs faster than conscious color naming.
Incongruent stimuli demand top-down inhibitory control from the anterior cingulate cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to suppress the automatic reading response.
Clinical & Research Utility
Used extensively to evaluate executive function, selective attention, cognitive flexibility, ADHD symptoms, and age-related frontal lobe decline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who discovered the Stroop Effect?
American psychologist John Ridley Stroop published the seminal paper on verbal reaction interference in 1935.
Why does color naming take longer than word reading?
Automatic lexical processing creates response competition, requiring inhibitory filtering before motor response execution.
What is a typical Stroop interference delay?
A healthy interference delay averages between 100 ms and 250 ms slower on incongruent vs. congruent stimuli.
Can Stroop training improve focus?
Yes, practicing inhibitory control drills sharpens sustained attention and impulse regulation in distractor-heavy environments.
Can anyone be completely immune to the Stroop effect?
Literate individuals cannot eliminate the effect entirely, as automated reading pathways remain permanently primed.
