Fuel Consumption and Trip Cost Calculator
Planning a road trip and want to know how much fuel you'll need and what the journey will cost? Our online fuel cost calculator estimates the amount of fuel required for any distance and shows the total trip cost based on the price per liter.
Fuel Saving Tips
How to use
- Enter the route distance in kilometers.
- Input the average fuel consumption of your car in liters per 100 km.
- Enter the current price per liter of fuel.
- The calculator will automatically show the estimated fuel volume and trip cost.
- For a round trip, enter the total distance or double the one-way distance.
Fuel Consumption Formula
To calculate the required fuel volume: Fuel amount = Distance × Consumption per 100 km ÷ 100.
Trip cost is calculated separately: Trip cost = Fuel amount × Price per liter.
Trip Cost Calculation Example
You plan to drive 350 km. Average fuel consumption is 7.5 L/100 km, fuel price is UAH 60 per liter.
- Fuel needed: 350 × 7.5 ÷ 100 = 26.25 L
- Trip cost: 26.25 × 60 = UAH 1,575
What Affects Fuel Consumption
- Speed — higher speeds increase aerodynamic drag and fuel use
- Traffic and frequent stops — city driving typically uses more fuel
- Driving style — harsh acceleration and braking increase consumption
- Vehicle load — extra weight and luggage affect fuel economy
- Road terrain — hills, descents, and winding roads change engine load
- Vehicle condition — tyre pressure, engine health, and regular servicing
- Weather — cold temperatures, engine warm-up, and air conditioning
How to Calculate Fuel for a Round Trip
If you need to return via the same route, multiply the one-way distance by two.
Example: destination is 180 km away, total round trip is 360 km. At 8 L/100 km: 360 × 8 ÷ 100 = 28.8 L. At UAH 60/L, total fuel cost: 28.8 × 60 = UAH 1,728.
How to Reduce Fuel Costs
- Keep tyre pressure at the manufacturer's recommended level
- Avoid harsh acceleration and braking
- Plan your route accounting for traffic and road restrictions
- Don't carry unnecessary heavy items
- Keep up with regular vehicle maintenance
- Compare trip costs for different route options
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate fuel consumption per 100 km?
Divide the amount of fuel used by the distance driven and multiply by 100. For example, if your car used 35 liters over 500 km, the average consumption is 7 L/100 km.
How do I find out the cost of a car trip?
Multiply the distance by the average fuel consumption per 100 km, divide by 100, and multiply by the price per liter. The online calculator does this automatically.
Can I calculate trip cost for petrol, diesel, or gas?
Yes. Just enter the price per liter of the relevant fuel and the car's average consumption on that fuel. If you use different fuels, use the actual consumption figure for each.
How do I calculate fuel for 1,000 km?
Multiply the average fuel consumption by 10. For example, at 7.5 L/100 km, a 1,000 km trip requires approximately 75 liters.
Why does actual fuel use differ from the calculated amount?
The calculator uses the values you enter and a mathematical formula. Actual consumption may differ due to traffic, speed, weather, vehicle load, road terrain, and the car's condition.
Does the calculator include toll roads and parking costs?
The fuel-based calculation shows only the estimated fuel cost. Tolls, parking, food, and other road expenses are accounted for separately, if such fields are available in the tool.
