Car Window Tint Calculator

The car window tint calculator helps you determine total visible light transmission (VLT) through vehicle glass after installing solar film. Estimate net transparency by combining factory glass properties with film ratings.

Legal standards & regulations:

• Windshield: minimum 75% light transmission.

• Front side windows: minimum 70% light transmission.

• Rear windows: no VLT limitation if dual side mirrors are installed.

⚠️ Penalty fine for unlawful tinting: 340 UAH. Repeat violation carries driver's license suspension for 3 to 6 months.

How to use

  1. Enter baseline factory glass VLT percentage (typically 75–90%).
  2. Specify the window film VLT rating (e.g. 5%, 15%, 20%, 35%, 50%, 70%).
  3. Select the window position (windshield, front sides, or rear windows).
  4. Review the calculated combined VLT percentage.
  5. Compare the final number with legal tint limits in your jurisdiction.

What Is Visible Light Transmission (VLT)

Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is the percentage of visible solar light that passes through glass. A higher VLT percentage means clearer, lighter windows, while a lower percentage produces darker shading.

  • 90–95% — standard clear factory automotive glass
  • 70–80% — light ceramic heat-rejection film
  • 50% — medium light shading
  • 35% — popular medium tint
  • 15–20% — dark privacy tint
  • 5% — maximum limo darkness

How to Calculate Combined VLT

Factory vehicle glass already absorbs 10% to 25% of light. To determine the combined result, multiply both decimal coefficients: Total VLT = (Glass VLT × Film VLT) / 100.

  • 90% glass + 80% film = 72% net VLT
  • 90% glass + 70% film = 63% net VLT
  • 90% glass + 50% film = 45% net VLT
  • 90% glass + 35% film = 31.5% net VLT
  • 90% glass + 20% film = 18% net VLT

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate window tint percentage?

Multiply the factory glass VLT percentage by the tint film VLT percentage and divide by 100. For example, 90% glass with 70% film yields 63% total light transmission.

Can I simply subtract the film darkness percentage?

No. Light filtering is multiplicative rather than additive. Subtracting percentages results in inaccurate figures.

What is factory car glass VLT without tint?

Most modern automotive glass has a baseline transparency between 80% and 92% due to slight built-in iron oxide green or blue solar tinting.

What does 5%, 20%, or 35% film mean?

These numbers indicate the film's VLT rating — the percentage of light it allows through. 5% is the darkest (limo tint), whereas 35% is medium darkness.
